Even If (Sermon)

Scripture contains many stories of God's faithfulness and goodness toward his people. In particular, we see many cases where God responds in remarkable and spectacular ways when his people return to faithful obedience.

There is a very important caution to consider, though. By associating God's faithfulness and goodness as a *response* to our faithfulness and obedience, we can be misled into seeing God's grace as transactional—namely, God is good to us only when we are "good toward God".

The story of the fiery furnace in Daniel 3 asserts that our faithfulness and obedience toward God should *always* be the case—even if God chooses not respond in the way we want him to. When we pray for healing or deliverance from hardship, is God "good" only when he grants such healing or deliverance? Or is God *always* good and faithful (because that is who he is), and it is up to us to learn to accept God's will and grace however it comes to us? Do we pray the Lord's prayer saying (and *truly meaning*) THY will be done?

God is good, faithful and trustworthy—always!
