Biblical guidelines to prayer

As the people of God prayer is important—obviously. Billy Graham called prayer the “sweetest work of the soul.” Martin Luther King Jr said: “To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.”

Karl Barth wrote that prayer is “the beginning of an uprising against the disorder of the world.” I’m not sure I always think of it that way—but we probably should.

What does the Bible say about prayer? What guidelines does it give us?

A little while ago Pastor Ruttan delivered a sermon called “How can I pray more effectively?” As a part of that he provided a handout with a series of biblical guidelines for prayer. This podcast episode goes through them, provides the biblical references, and adds some clarifying comments or explanations.

This episode doesn’t include everything the Bible says about prayer. After all, exploring prayer is like exploring the ocean; the more you explore, the more you discover. But it does include some aspects of prayer that we often neglect or forget.

Enjoy!
