True happiness, Contentment and the Coveting Thief

Roy Oswald says: "The truly happy person is the one who wants, more than anything else, what he already has."

That's a surprising way to look at it. Coveting what other people have (and even their achievements) seems nearly impossible to avoid in our culture of non-stop comparison and bigger, better, more.

This sermon is a part of our series called "The Royal Family Code" and explores commandments eight and ten. They are different but related: to not steal and to not covet (Exodus 20: 15, 17).

It also explores Jesus' words about storing up treasures in heaven (not earth) and Paul's insight about being content in all situations. These help us stay true to these two commandments.

After exploring the biblical passages we provide two applications for modern life. What if we were able to be content, more happy, and also faithful to the narrow path?

Bernard of Clairvaux wrote: "Trying to find happiness in the world is like watching a starving man try to eat air." Let's look to the right sources of ultimate satisfaction in the foosteps of the one who told us to store up treasures in heaven.
